Security
Security is essential for preppers. What good is storing provisions without the means to protect them? A prepper must be able to protect his/herself in any situation. In times of massive civil unrest people can get desperate. They may attack you or your loved ones. These times will also bring out the bad element of people who want to rape, pillage, and burn. A base of operations must be secured. Plans and dry runs must be made to make sure your defenses are working.
Try to remember that no type of security is going to be impenetrable. It merely deters someone from bothering you. When designing a security system for your home, try to make it look like more trouble than the worth for a person who wants your stuff.
Locks are the most common deterrent and they work pretty well. Make sure that the locks on your doors work properly.
Try planting thorny bushes around your windows. This will stop any curious neighbors and keep out all but the very stubborn criminal. I prefer blackberry bushes because they serve two purposes. They provide food as well as security. There are also many different kinds of flowering thorny bushes that will make the yard pretty as well as secure.
Things like firewood and vehicles can be placed in strategic places as well. A log can block a driveway or road, and cleverly stacked firewood can serve as cover from incoming fire. Vehicles can act as cover as well. Just park them long ways across a road or driveway. They are also an easily movable blockade for controlling access to an area.
Firearms are an essential part of security. I go more into detail about them on the firearms page, but you need to have and be proficient with at least one.
